The Sherwood Forest Archery Day Camp
|
This camp is designed to provide outdoor activities to relive the experience of Robin Hood and his jolly men. The main purpose is to provide fun and games, but the intention is for the participants to also have an educational experience. While a high priority is placed on the sport of archery, learning some of the skills Robin Hood required to survive and get around in the forest is part of the activities.
During the archery part the youths will be taught the handling of bows and arrows. With safety as the highest priority, shooting at targets at various distances, proper etiquette, knowledge on equipment and tournament rules are taught in this segment. Practice by way of many archery games will result in all the youths to achieve a reasonable knowledge about the sport. A field and 3-D archery tournament on the last day will provide the opportunity to show off their learned skills.

Woodland skills, like tree and plant identification, are taught by several hands-on excursions into our own 50 acres of forest. Learning what plants can be used for medicinal or even culinary purposes and what plants to avoid can be useful for the rest of ones life. Camp fire building and safety is another skill being taught. An approximate 4 Kilometer hike through the forest will further provide the chance to learn about plants with the help of various handbooks.

To find ones way with a map and compass is an ability to possess when in the woods. It is being taught by using topographical maps and orienteering compasses. A compass game in conjunction with a treasure hunt will provide practice in an open area. An approximate one kilometer orienteering course will require teams of participants to find their way through the forest by following provided compass bearings. A scavenger hunt is combined with this event to test the acquired woodland skills.
